Default Phrag. Paul Eugene Conroy - A primary hybrid and my first ever Phrag

So yesterday I was (sort of) passing an orchid nursery which I had visited back in March... it was only a bit out of the way and the excuse was that I wanted to see if they had any 'Spanish Moss' for sale. They did... but I also came out with my first Phrag and a second Restrepia

This is Phrag. Paul Eugene Conroy and is a primary hybrid of wallisii and longifolium I think it takes a lot of it's looks from the wallisii but with a shortening of the flag and petals compared to that.

It has two flowers and a new bud so obviously sequential. The first four pics were taken with the flowers how they were when I bought it. The final picture is after I had carefully (oh so very carefully and terrified I would cause a flower to drop) staked it differently with a cross stake to hold up the oldest flower.

I really love this one, though it was actually not my first choice I was looking at a short petalled red slippered hybrid, but I let hubby choose because he was being so wonderful letting me buy more orchids (actually it was his credit card as well) . I liked both and I knew he favoured this one because of the long petals... I did try and persuade him that I would buy the red one and let him have this one... but for some reason he didn't go for that idea

It gorgeous Rosie! Hubby chose well (not that your choice of the red would have been a choice either tho)

Oh dear! Now you've gone and done it. You're on the Phrag. addiction trail.

Thanks everyone... Terri, I know, it's bound to be the first of many.

This one has a second semi-mature looking fan which I don't think has flowered yet as well as another small newish growth... I'm hoping that means another will be almost ready to flower by the time the sequential buds on this spike finish. Not sure how many flowers these have on one spike, I now have two sequential slippers on my mantle piece (the other is a Paph Pinocchio)

I was under the impression that Phrags had short lived flowers, and that they would drop suddenly with no sign of starting to fade first.

Well neither of these things is true of this one.

The older of the two flowers in this pic has dropped. It DID slowly fade before dropping.

The newer of the two flowers is still there (along with a brand new one). This flower was already open over a month ago when I first bought the plant and it shows no sign of fading yet.

I was expecting it to be much shorter lived from what I have heard about Phrags.

Hi Rosie, I don't know if you've seen my thread about mistakenly buying two Phrags? Well one is in spike and I'm scared to death of doing anything to make it blast.

It's called Phrag caudatum x self, will it look anything like your one? That is just so lovely and amazing looking.

I know nothing about Phrags so I don't know whether I'm likely to get one bloom to a spike or more? Does the fan die after the bloom is finished? I was told on the other thread that it will probably be about 6 weeks until the spike blooms.

Congrats. Looks like another "slipper"-y slope to me...
Beautiful blooms!
