Start a Phragmapedium Forum Anyone???
I'm finally back to the Board after working hard over the past 2 months to get my new collection of Phrags - Species and hybrids I bought from Hooser Orchids comfortable in my basement greenhouse. I'm a Fan of both Phaps and Phrags but I see there are no Phrag Forums. Is there enough interest interest in Phrags to setup a separate Forum to discuss thier care and other special needs? I have a list of the Phrag plant names along with some photos to post. William, the owner of Hooser listed that there may be some of his collection plants that may be rare and should be handled with care. Therefore, wish to increase my knowledge of this type of Orchid so I can keep my collection healthy and help others.
Thank you

That would be cool, but I don't really see many Phrag posts throughout the forum. Maybe right now there are not many people growing these? Anyone who does should speak up now.

I'm with Bookworm; I've never grown any but I do love the flowers and I certainly wouldn't mind learning more about them.

Yes, there is not much info out there for Phrags. At least not where I have researched. It seems it is not a very popular orchid species to grow. This is the one orchid that likes to be over watered so it may be good for beginners. But when I was a beginner I never heard of Phrags. I hope to attract an expert in this field. Are there any Phrag growing experts out there?????

Check out the Cypripedium Alliance - Other forum listed just below this one. That's where all the Phrag threads are.

I agree Valhill, there are no very many growers for phragmipediums, but it is largely due to the fact that they are so water consumptive. A beginner who may water a phal or a dendrobium a little too much and kill it could give the same amount to a phragmipedium but it may not be enough to sustain it, especially Besseae hybrids which make up the majority of the plants available for market. Also as far as beginners go it is quite expensive to purchase a phragmipedium, 30-50 dollars, and the risk of loosing it is so high that they would simply not shell out the money to buy something they would only kill, toss out as soon as the flowers faded, which makes their appeal as well as profit potential severly less than that for lower maintenance plants like the phals and dendrobiums that flood the markets.
If you do start a social group then I would be interested in hearing some of your research as well as adding some of my experiences with this genus.
