Phrag. Mem. Dick Clements vs Phrag Schlimii 'Wilcox'
Cool Phrag. Mem. Dick Clements vs Phrag Schlimii 'Wilcox'

Hi guys, it looks as though both the Mem Dick Clements & the Phrag Schlimii 'Wilcox' are compact growing. (If this is not true PLEASE tell me.) Is either of them easier to bloom than the other? I thought I read somewhere that the Dick Clements has the about the same light requirements as Phals. Have you found this to be true?

My orchid club is having its big show this weekend and I have an ichy credit card!

M

According to this thread Recommendations for compact pink Phrag , Phrag schlimii is compact but difficult to grow...

according to orchidweb Orchid of the Week Library: Phrag. Mem. Dick Clements , Mem Dick Clements is also fairly easy to grow. I do not know this hybrid, but I have Phrag Jason Fischer (Mem. Dick Clements x besseae) which is quite compact and so far quite easy too (growing in S/H)

Hi Ramon, thanks for the link about the difficulties in growing the Phrag Schimilii. I would prefer a red to be honest and I think either a Phrag Hanne Popow (besseae x schlimii) or Saint Ouen (Hanne Popow x besseae) or Mem Dick Clements would be pretty terrific. Choosing one over the other might prove to be more than I can mentally handle. I mean after all, a Phrag. needs a friend; doesn't he?
Regards, m

I see that Phrag Mem. Dick Clements can get to 20" spread of leaves. I don't think this meets the definition (well, mine anyways ) of compact. Sure is a beaut though.

I agree with Ross. Here is a pic of my Phrag DC. Not the best pic as Ross would agree but this is the new growth as I am growing in the GH. The flower is from last bloom.

Wow Doc, that is a beaut! I have a Mem. Dick Clements and love it. It is more of a cherry red rather than the tomato red that I had expected, but it is a pretty thing. I didn't set it up to bloom. Bought it at an orchid show in March locally. It is my avatar currently. Bloomed three times in a row and is now growing fairly quickly.

While schlimii can be somewhat tricky to grow, the schlimii "Wilcox" is actually not a true species, it is actually a hybrid now named Cardinale. It is more compact than Mem. Dick Clements.

but if you want RED, then yes, nothing beats Jason Fisher (except for Fox Valley Fireball or Firestorm, perhaps?). Hanne Popow are mostly pink though, but all of the Hanne Popow I got from Ecuagenera have great shape and color AND fragrant!

Have a great show! and let us know your haul afterwards.
