this section of phragmipedium has been extremely confusing. for many years the judges were awarding obvious Grandes as pure caudatum.
The entity currently known by the RHS as "humboldtii" was warscewiczianum for years, and also synonymous with "popowii", which is considered invalid by the RHS. This is the compact growing and typically much darker long-petalled species.
Currently RHS lists x grande as a natural hybrid (longifolium x humboldtii), but still lists Grande as (caudatum x longifolium), registered by Veitch in 1881. In addition Wössner Supergrande is the name given to (longifolium x humboldtii), registered in 1998. And of course (caudatum x longifolium) was "re-registered" as Leslie Garay in 2012. This is the "Grande" we have all known and loved (for >100 years). what a mess!
