Attention Central Florida Residents

I'm interested in adding a Paph to my orchid collection but am concerned that the warm, humid environment would be harmful to them. Has anyone from central Florida had success with these? I don't have a green house so they would either be grown out doors or in an air conditioned 72 to 74 degree environment. Do they require a sustained temperature drop in order to initiate blooms? Thank you for your input.

Hi June,

I have 3 Paphs and am in south fla. I keep them on the back patio. No direct sun on them lots of light, temp down to 45 and up to whatever we get. I also have an overhead fan on so there is air movement. 1 has 2 buds on it, I lost a bud on 1 of the other ones when moving it inside when we had a really cold snap with lots of wind. boohoo. I don't know about the temp drop for blooms.
(I keep the water off the leaves)

Go get one or 2 so it has company and enjoy.

I have one paph still alive, but I have killed many in my attempts to grow them. They seem to not care for my environment. I'm struggling to keep my survivor going. Mine is in the house with me.

Thanks Lorraine. I have a great spot for Phals so maybe a Paph would be happy there also. They receive a little more light than what is generally recommended but are doing very well. It seems like these two types have similar care requirements so I'm hoping for success. Now I just have to find a Paph. Oh yeah, what's up with our weather anyway?

Don't quite know except I'm freezing if the temp gets below 70. I'm digging out the sweatshirt and pants I keep for visiting up north. Brrrrrrr. Hope you find a really cool paph. I know someone who raises them. I can check to see if he ships. Let me know. He always seems to have great plants for sale at our meetings.

I appreciate your offer, and yes, let me know. I live in Brevard County and the local Orchid Society will be having a show here during the first weekend of May. It's usually rather small, but it's much better than the selections at HD or Lowe's. I'm also hoping to find a Brassovola Novosa for my grape-vine ball project. There's another large show scheduled in mid-May down in Homestead. You live so close I bet you're going. How could you not?

I'll check up on the grower. I think you are talking about the Redlands on the 16-17-18 th of May and I'm out of town. I keep missing the Homestead shows. My timing with family is the same as many shows. I will let you know about the paphs and check if he has the Brasso for you. I need a couple days though. I'll track him down on Tuesday when I'm in the area.

Outdoors in bright shade will be great as well.
You should give it a go.
