The plant is actually registered as Cym. Memoria Amelia Earhart (Hazel Tyers x devonianum). It is too bad the seller did not provide a cultivar name as there are several popular mericlones out there, looking much the same. It is a pendent plant so when bloom time comes, support it on another pot or hang it so the bloom spikes can elongate and show off this plant properly.

FWIW. My cymbs are still outside. It's been in the lower 30fs. I'm bringing them in today. Rbarata is correct that they shouldn't freeze. You might look into ultra mini cymbs, since you are sure you love them.

Ok, so I have placed him outside with a view to hanging him as soon as possible seeing as 4 spikes are already emerging!

I am confused about how to care for an orchid that is kept outside. For example, it has rained here for 2 days in a row and today is sunny. Will it not be too wet if it gets rained on too frequently and be at risk of rotting? Should it kept under a shelter?

I would suggest bringing it back indoors either to an unheated room - say a spare bedroom or an unheated porch is really good for them.

Although it is quite mild at the moment and nights are not too cold we don't get the rise in daytime temps that growers further south do, we also don't get as many dry days and cold wet conditions will cause issues along with slugs and snails at this time of year.

Oh dear.. ok thank you... As much as it pains me to say this, I may have to admit defeat on this one. I honestly thought it would be far smaller than it is and I just haven't got the room to keep it inside.

Anyone interested in an Amelia Earhart??

Look for Chinese Cymbidiums. They can be very much smaller and bloom.
