Cymbidium being eaten & / or blasting! - Orchid Board

1st 2 pics were the beginning of this month/new year, the last 2 were when I came home from work tonight.

too fast!

Any hope or ideas?

Eaten. Either snail/slug (most likely) or caterpillar/worm. If it were my plant, I'd be anointing it with a health dose of snail bait for the former, and BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) or Spinosad-containing spray for the latter. Take a look at it after dark or early morning... you may catch the culprit, in which case squishing is very satisfying and quite effective.

Bayer 3 in 1 all I have on hand.

Did you notice the bud right next to that one? I am worried about bud blast as that looks to have slowed down and turning yellow.

That one bud does look like it is blasting. I have the same thing happen sometimes... for whatever reason, it stops developing (with luck it's the only one). Since my Cyms live outside and get whatever nature does to them, I suspect abrupt weather changes, or some other insult... sometimes I think I know, other times, no idea. even a bug (such as thrip) that lays an egg inside the bud can do that. But for the eaten one, I just hope that you can find the perp and squish it.

If you can submerge the pot in a bucket of water, for a length of time you may flush the critter out.

I've had a lot of slug and snail issues with my cymbidiums in the past and they did a number on the flowers last year. With all the new spikes forming now, I've been doing a quick slug/snail check every night via flashlight. When I first started, I was getting 6-10 a night, now I'm getting 1 every other week or so. For mine, manual removal is the easier option, but I've had good success with baits in the past.

I only have the phals in the house and they've never been damaged by the odd mouse, but I've found peanut butter baited snap traps very effective if the cats don't take care of it first.

I suspect snail on the lowest one and bud drop on the yellowing one. 3 and 1 is fine but I do not think that is your problem. Clean up around the base of the plant and bait with Deadline. It should stop the problem of slugs and snails.

Mice will go of with the whole bud usually.
