Many Cymbidiums are fragrant but just because it is "vanilla white" does not mean it has a fragrance. Hopefully there was a name on your plant. If so, it may be possible to tell ahead of time if there will be a fragrance. If not, you will just have to wait until it blooms. There is also more a probability of fragrance if it is a small flowered plant of Asian species parentage.
