MW: It is nice to know that there is another Asian Cymbidium addict out there.
To grow them properly, I grow all my Asian Cymbidiums in traditional japanese pumice mix. I purchase them directly from japan, not available in US/Canada.
I am Taiwanese, so I know very well the quality and cost of the Asian Cymbidiums Matt from Tenshin. They are the cheapest varieties from Taiwan and I would only consider them 2nd or 3rd tier cymbidium varieties and qualities. Almost all the plants he brings are medium seedlings (3 bulbs). It takes 2-3 years to grow so they will become blooming size (if you are growing them properly). Asian Cymbidiums only bloom on mature psedubobulbs which takes about 2-3 years to mature.
To get tiger stripe and snake skin Cymbidiums, I highly recommend you to check out Flora Peculia from Toronto. He goes to Japan every year and he is able to bring the Cymbidiums you want for you. I know that he does attend US shows every year so he can ship it to you.

Since the Asian species fans in the US and Canada cannot get the mix you recommend, what products similar to this would be available to them?

Unfortunately, there is no other substitute I recommend. As the Asian Cymbidium Empress, I fly to Taiwan and Japan to find the traditional Cymbidium mix. Once they are grown in this mix, they grow very fast and very bushy in 2 growing seasons. Trully, most of the struggles I see from all hobbyists who are trying very hard to grow them, all of the problems can resolved by the mix. It is a detail and a very important one that cannot be ignored. This is my personal experience and what I see from other people.
