You will probably loose the roots eventually but leave well enough alone for now. As it was a new growth, the roots which remain will be fairly short and should not cause a problem. They can be removed when the time comes to repot the plant. The fact that there appears to be a new growth eye emerging is a good sign and the roots may well be able to support that to some extent.
