Looking for Cymbidium Canaliculatum - Orchid Board

Was wondering if anyone knows where I can find Cymbidium Canaliculatum? I bought a small seedling of var. Sparkesii But I was looking for others and other varieties. Let me know thanks.

The best place to start here in the US is probably Santa Barbara Orchid Estate but there are few, if any varieties other than var sparksii available in the US, except from hobby growers. Home of the species canaliculatum is of course Australia, but importation with the cites requirement is extraordinarily expensive if not impossible. You do not say which state you live in. It takes a specific environment in which to thrive and bloom. Be sure you can provide that before making the investment in other varieties.

Sorry I live in Omaha NE. Thanks for the warning as well I have been sucessful at growing some of the Hybrids from this species and now I was just wanting to find the species infact I just had a Cym. Kuranda and Cym. Black Samba get pulled for AOS judging, in March at or local show, granted it was not awarded but it was nice to get it pulled. Thanks again I have contacted them earlier this week and am just waiting on a replay. Take care

I am glad to see you are having success with the immediate hybrids. They are far easier to grow than the species as they are not so touchy about having to need their exact native environment. Both Kuranda and Little Black Sambo are well worth growing!

I do not know if you have the dark form of LBS but there is a green form with maroon marking. "Cinnabar' (awarded as a canaliculatum) is one cultivar marked with dark burgundy spots. Another is 'San Leandro' with maroon centrally on the segments. Google one or the other of these cultivars and you will find some photos. There may be other green forms but I do not know if any have been mericloned. These two have not been.

Some talking heads claim LBS is "so yesterday", but I have not seen anything better to date I would want in my collection for color and presentation. "New is not always better" when it comes to orchids.

I do have the dark veriety of LBS I was unaware there was a different one I will have to add that to the list to hunt for. Thanks for the information

I would not be surprised to find some different cultivars in Florida, as it is definitely a warm growing/warmth tolerant plant. Also look for cultivars of Little Beauty. Most I have seen are the dark form, but it, as well as LBS, may have been remade using a spotted green form of the species.
