Default Cymbidium surprise!

Last summer, a neighbor offered me a few small divisions of her Cyms (no i.d.s). Plants looked not too bad, tho not robust, a couple definitely looked like they needed more sun. I gave them fertilizer, put them at the side of the house, watered regularly - didn't expect any spikes this year, but a couple surprised me with spikes a few months ago.

I had no idea what the blooms might look like ... One had only a handful of buds (one of the two that had droopy foliage), but they were deliciously dark colored, so I was very excited to see what they would look like. The other got 20 buds.

The dark, reddish colored blooms are about 3".

The yellow ones are about 2".

I'm going to have to find a better spot for these ...

Thanks for looking

Well done, Sonya ! I like the first two pictures with its yummy colors and the flowers are big. The other one have bright neon colors and cascading flowers. If they bloomed for you where they are now, I don't think you need to change location at all.

Gorgeous...as a beginner, my goal in life right now is to nurture at least one of my orchids from box store beauty to a spike I can call my own! I could call you one of my heroes

Wow, those are both gorgeous, but I think the red is my favorite. I wish I had such an awesome neighbor!

Thanks for all the kind comments, everyone!

The red one is pretty fabulous, isn't it? I look forward to seeing it in bloom in the future, when it can hopefully get more blooms

Bud - Yeah, hopefully they can stay where I had them (the two blooming ones got moved to keep them out of the recent rain) - cos I don't know where else to put them!

Andrew - next time my neighbor comes my way with Cym divisions, I can point her to your direction!

Ryan - most of my Cyms are noids that I got because they were pretty, and didn't cost much, or they were divisions given to me by neighbors - they're just as pretty without names as with

VM - You can do it! And we're all here to help! Pretty much everything I know about growing orchids today, I learned from Orchid Board members!

Thanks!

I'm with you - I looooooooove the red one!

I think most orchid growers are on the look-out for homes for divisions from their plants - you can only let them get so big before they start to become unmanageable. And then once we know who we know that also grow orchids, they become the obvious choice I've tried to give divisions to non-orchid growing friends and neighbors, and most refuse, as they are sure they will kill the plants (That said, this particular neighbor is quite awesome!)

I totally agree. Names are nice but yeah I won't pass up a plant I really love. The one I got has colors that remind me of apple blossoms. Love it!
