Cymbidium Chunlan opening its flower!!!
Default Cymbidium Chunlan opening its flower!!!

I bought This Chunlan (known as goeringii) in bud from Ten Shin Gardens last month.

It came bareroot and I potted it up in hydroton. been diligently watering it hoping the bud won't blast.

Well, today I noticed the green flower bud lined with yellow is poking out of the dry tan sheath. Yay!!!

My sinense is I think dying.

I look forward to seeing it in bloom!

It is opening up fast.

I think I should be able to post a picture of open bloom before the weekend. I hope it is fragrant as well.

Default Open

It basically opened up the day after I posted, so I guess this is about as wide open as it gets.

Not too fond of the closed up appearance, but I like the coloring of the flower.

It has strong scent as well. not necessarily great or anything...kind of like my coelogyne. kind of sweet, kind of urine-like.

The crippling of the flower in not opening the lateral sepals evenly is due to the fact it was transported bare root while in bud. The dorsal sepal will always be hooded to some degree as that is natural for this species. The petals always "protect" the column.

I would be more excited about the lovely variegation on both the flower and the new growth! Grow it well to establish that new growth so you can see a better bloom next year.

I hope it flattens out on the next years flowering.

I have seen some hybrids whose dorsal was upright, although I don't mind the more natural one.

I'm just mainly bothered by the two lateral sepals being crippled. lol

I do like the leaves.

Also, while poking around the plant, I found one more new shoot emerging but too soon to tell if it's another spike or another growth.

You can probably grow this outside in Cali, right?

It is a nice variety, looks a lot like the one called Tian Cao by Tenshin Gardens. I have one of those and it grows well outside (away from freezing) in NorthWest pacific coast.
The flower will be better next year after your plant settles in its pot for a growing season!
California weather should fit very well to its needs (warm moist summers, cool winters)
