Default CYM beginner question

Hi. I am new to this forum new to orchids and new to cymbidiums. I have a couple plant that just about finished their blooms. One appears to be having new growth starting. My question is can I repot them now. They have clearly out grown the pots. I assume I also need to cut the old flower stalk off at the base. Many thanks

Paul

Now is NOT the time to repot your Cymbidium. Wait until the weather warms up and all danger of frost is gone from your area. Until then, nurse it along in a cool, bright area of your house if you do not have a greenhouse.

When it warms up around late February or March, you can divide it into two pots or pot it up into a larger pot. Cut the spent bloom stem now about an inch or so from the bottom. It will not regrow.

Welcome to the OB. I also urge you to visit the Search icon at the top of the page and type in questions or topics of interest to you. Great references for the future.

The cymbidiums are inside my house now of course. I dont know if cymbidiums will do better here in the summer inside or out. This will be my first full summer here in southern oregon and last summer it got up to 100+. My sunroom is air conditioned so am wondering if I should keep them inside instead. I assume once they stop blooming and before I report them I continue to water but not fertilize, i.e. give them a rest??

Basic Cymbidium culture (links)

Cyms are generally very heat tolerant, but should be shaded from mid-day - afternoon during extreme heat.

Paul;

Welcome to the board.

Unfortunately not on OB but if you google "AOS culture sheets" you'll be taken to the AOS page where you can select the sheets by genus.

Cheers.

Even though your summer temps may get up to 100 degrees on occasion, Cyms need more light and air movement than a sun porch. Get them outside as soon as possible in a 50% shady area.

Cyms do not want a rest period. After blooming they will be putting strength into new growths so continue to feed on a dilute basis ie "weekly/weakly" or whenever you water.

Ok will do. SOunds like I can enjoy them on the new patio we will be pouring soon. I think maybe the NW facing portion of the patio may provide the sun/air that you indicated they need. So cool Oregon summer rain showers will not hurt them ??

Mine are often out in cold night rain in winter, so summer rain (even if cool) shouldn't be a problem

Cymbidiums generally are extremely hardy plants
