Hi All, My local Home Depot has recently gotten some Cym's and I was thinking of getting one. My question is are these able to be growen in S. Florida? The medium that was in the pots look like a fine bark mixture, is this what is used for them or is the bark breaking down? Thanks for your help!!
Am in Jacksonville Fl and grow a lot of cymbidiums.
Your question is not an easy one to answer. There are cymbidiums that grow in Florida - in fact there has been a cymbidium hybridizer and growen in Homestead - but it must be the right cymbidium. It would be hard to determine if the home center plant would grow and bloom next year without knowing its name and parantage. Many cymbidiums sold in home centers are cool growers and require cool summer temperatures to make flowers. The vendors sell them after initiating spikes in some cool location and sell them here. They are pretty but many will never bloom again. Some may but its hard to tell without knowing what the parentage is. Hope this helps.
