First ever Cymbidium spike!

YAY! I'm as excited as you are! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cymbidiums!!!! Wouldn't you know...since I live in Florida and the standards don't work here.

Sure would LOVE to see a picture of that when it opens!

I think the problem with standards in Florida, may be that the cool nights come too late. I usually see spikes starting in late summer-early autumn, with blooming beginning early winter - early spring. By the time night temps in Florida might be cool enough, the plants may be past the spike stage ... or maybe there aren't enough consecutive nights with cool enough temps ...

There are! Maybe this Cymbidium likes to bloom twice Year. That's what I'm hoping anyway.

They don't? That's so sad. I really like them.

Cold winters from Central to Southern Florida are rare. It does happen...but not often. I think White Rabbit is right, there aren't enough cold nights for the amount of hours necessary for them to bloom. I've had one begin to bloom but blasted.

There are some epiphytic Cyms that do well here. And of course the warm growers which don't even compare to a standard.

I have a nice epiphytic Cym hanging from a tree. He bloomed last year here....so I have big hopes.

I LOVE Cymbidiums. Love them. Like really really really love them! Sigh....

It's spiking in the height of summer after all...
Maybe it's a consistent thing with it. Hopefully.

I highly suspect this is the green one that looks less like a standard cym than all the others though.

I like some of the smaller flowering (but very numerous flowers) arching cymbidiums, but standard cymbidiums have their own attraction with large colorful flowers.

I too am a big cymbidium fan but I do not grow them.
They just get too big and I cannot provide enough cooling either. I definitely wouldn't want to carry the monster in and out every day in the fall either. lol

Fortunately, cymbidium cuflowers are readily available and quite long lasting in the vase, so I buy them every now and then.
