I used to have white/green version of Cym. goeringii. They grew like wild fire and flower like crazy each spring after spending cold winter outside (but sheltered from direct exposure).
This type of cymbidiums are very common in Asia. People use lightweight fired stone (have no clue what they are called in English) particles of about half inch in size. fill it up in tall porcelain pot that has holes all over on the side and the bottom.
Hey I got the same plant from Quay. Mine is growing in sh. No spikes but it seems happy. Need to figure out where it'll grow over the winter for its "chill" period.
I think different varieties have different requirement (or tolerance to cold) but the one I used to have was actually a wild species (white and green mostly and petals were much wider and bigger) and I kept it in the high 30s and 40s. Literally outdoor with protection or unheated sunroom.
