What Have I Done!! Gigantic Noid Cymbidium Male
Default What Have I Done!! Gigantic Std Cymbidium Valley Kiwi "Wow"

So to be honest I am not really into Cymbidiums. I think they are very pretty and all, but they are much to large and require much too much light for me to possibly give them in my house in the winter.

Alas one bad part of being in charge of live goods in a retail environment is I can order things not only I like but I think customers will like (even though I know most of them are doomed to death no matter how much information I give out on culture and needs).

I have resisted the urge to buy Cymbidiums in the past but this time I just couldn't resist. Not only did I purchase the biggest one in the whole shipment I had to have one of the only ones that came without its tag...sigh...but I did it...Cause I'm an addict...but not bad for $24.99

This "Big Bertha" as I will call her, stands about 3 3/4 feet tall with what looks like 5 new growths and with 1 almost fully matured spike and 3 more on their way.......With lovely very large flowers that even "cupped" such as they are measure just shy of 4 inches..

I think it really really needs to be re-potted..the roots are amazing but that 8 inch pot is ready to burst..was thinking of just putting it in a 10 inch without disturbing its root mass..Good idea or should I just leave it?

Leave it for now. Absolutely DO NOT REPOT a Cym until it is through its primary flush of blooming. Put it in a pretty cache pot so it will not tip over. Just do not let it sit in water. Repot in the spring when it warms up and the bloom is essentially over.

'Up-potting" or just dropping a plant in another larger pot without loosening the roots and keeping the root ball intact just gives rise to soggy centers and quick root loss.

Update
I contacted Koch Nurseries in Vancouver and they were kind enough to get me the name of this beauty..Which I am happy about because I have become somewhat obsessed with it..According to them it is Cymbidium Valley Kiwi "Wow"....I tried to look it up on RHS with no luck..but I will assume it is the right name and that makes me happy..not like I will start breeding Cyms anytime soon...

It's lovely whatever the name is. It's likely not registered. I find my couple of Cymbidiums to be very rewarding plants.
