We have dry summers and I like a mix that I can put my finger down into to tell whether it's dry or not. I mix whatever I have on hand, usually peat, sand, bark, perlite, coconut fiber, bits of sphag and always some Styrofoam peanuts in the bottom of the pot. I know of people who use quality potting soil with success.

I have also seen people using potting soil but it is generally not recommended because is does not give orchid roots enough aeration.

I agree. It is important to add ingredients such as perlite, bark, coconut fiber etc. Then the medium doesn't pack down tightly.
