Thank You, Flora from Flushing, Queens !

There is an old saying, "What goes around comes around", so to put a little education into this "Oh, Ah" thread about an antique hybrid:
Cym. Mary Pinchess, a cross of the species pumilum x Pajaro was made by Dos Pueblos Orchids and subsequently registered in 1960 by Pinchess. This makes it 51 years old+ as a cross. Several cultivars were mericloned and 15 cultivars, including some of the mericlones, were awarded. 'Del Rey' was one of them to be awarded in 1965. It appears to be like the Energizer Bunny, it just keeps popping up! CL |
Thanks for that info Cym Ladye...in fact I got this from a grower in Santa Barbara, CA...wow...a 51+ year old orchid...and I thought this was just a 4 year old in the pot

Wow Bud, those are beautiful booms. It looks similar to one I picked up this year (cym Via Ambarino "Golden Harvest" AM/AOS). I saw it at an orchid show last year, and finally was able to get one. It is just starting to bloom, and I'm dying for them to open.

Artemis, you must post pictures of your blooms...

It is just barely starting to open, but here's what it looks like so far. I'll post more when it fully opens...can hardly wait.

Nice looking plant and blooms, Bud. Flowers look quite large/robust for one of the mini cyms. So how tall is this "mini"?
|
Thank You, Paul ! It is 14 inches from bulb to longest leaf with 16 inches spikes (I am lucky to have two spikes with lots of blooms= two more buds to open)
|
Congratulation Bud, your cymbidium is beautiful:biggrin:

Aside from color, there is little similarity in these two plants. Mary Pinchess, considered an Intermediate in plant size, has flowers about 3" across; Via Ambarino flowers range 6" to 7" and are considered large standards in both plant habit and flower size. CL |
