Uh, . . . smoking pot, no . . . getting potted, no . . . I got it !!! RE-potting !!! Am I right, Huh Huh !?!?
Just did a bit of that myself here, cleaning up and repotting a horribly mistreated Den NOID given away to another member that I picked it up for !! Flopping around, literally, in an 8" pot full of sphagnum !!! Put it in a 5" pot withOUT sphagnum, used bark/leca combo, and rhizome clipped it in place ! Then, while removing the dried bracts, found a few mealy bugs so squished them and sprayed the entire plant with SPO ! Notice I said "picked up for another member" ?? I don't take freebies for myself anymore unless I see them first !!! Sorry for the OFF TRACK !!! Good luck with your Gramma !!! BTW, is it the standard full sized kind ? Don't know if I said so but mine's a mini ! Variety kiilani. Here's a good link for you; Grammatophyllum scriptum martae elegans care instructions |
Thanks again guys.
There is a distinct possibility that I will partake of a 'fizzy drink' or two today as I will be helping my brother celebrate his 81st birthday. My Gramms. are scriptum sub var 'Hihimanu' and are the large economy size. I also have a Gramm scriptum x Grammangis ellisi which is a smaller shade house friendly size. All are showing what stupidity/ignorance can do to healthy plants. Baz |
Older or younger brother ? HBD to him !!!

Hi Merlyn! Thanks for that very informative link about Gramm....the one that I have is Gram Scriptum var Citrinum "Hihimanu"...So far it is doing better now, after I have removed the decayed bulb. I really find interesting the last few paragraphs which discussed how this particular orchid decays, the way it described it, that seems how mine went. So maybe now that I have improved the potting hopefully it does recover well...many many thanks!

Luckily for me Merlyn, he is a few years my senior.

Chryss, I take my hat off to you! Consider yourself the recipient of a string of gold stars (and a few happy faces).
I tried your "leaving water in the saucer" trick and I do believe my Gramms. are on the road to recovery as they are sprouting new leaves. Baz |

Just want to make an update about my Gram Scriptum Hihimanu. Following all your recommendations, I have repotted with mixed media, sphag and leca, and have been giving it more watering. I also removed the decaying bulb.
Now after a year, it has shown a good improvement. Has grown more roots, and it does like lots of water, does not even mind if the saucer underneath has some water for awhile before I toss the excess out. And now I see something growing on the side..could be more roots..or I would be happier if it can be a flower spike.. Thanks! |
If you keep going like this Chryss, we will have to form a fan club.

Just an update of my Gram..watching how it recovers, amazing to note just how thirsty this orchid indeed is..I am now growing it outdoors but inside my Growcamp. So far it seems happily adjusted and the small growth is now more visible, a new pseudobulb in the making!
