Cymbidium - new growth Male
Default Cymbidium - new growth

I bought a Costco cym ( noid ) in flower in March. Its been outdoors throughout Summer and I only brought it indoors when temps went below 32f. Its currently in an unheated bedroom, I have the window open a crack and temps have consistently been between 40 and 75 ( in day)
There a 3 new growths, and I think the beginning of 2 spikes, but these do not seem to be growing.
Is it too late for spikes to develop ? I reckoned that since it flowered in March, maybe there is time ?

Cyms will withstand, and in some cases, prefer temps to go down to light frosts to initiate spikes. It may well have developed spikes - as opposed to just new growth. It will almost certainly be several weeks at least before any flowers open.

you have to be patient...also the light must be as the culture dictates and follow the regimental watering and fertilizer...if it is spiking then it might be Feb or March that it will open its blooms...

Now is about the right time for the spikes to show. I'm in southern calif and have spikes that are from 1 to 6 inches long.

It's definitely not too late for spikes to start.
Different cyms will bloom at different times, so the time spikes start will also vary. I have one cym starting to show buds, but others with still quite small spikes, and one that blooms in spring without spikes yet. I would suspect spikes, rather than new growth at this time of year If you can post pix, we might be able to tell if your new growths are spikes or not

thanks for all the input. I will try and post photos - unfortunately my camera doesn't take good close-ups but I will take another look.

usually once spikes are a couple inches long, they will start to look fat near the tip, while new growth will be flat, if that helps

that works just fine! looks like spikes, especially the first and last photos - tho I've been wrong before, but I do think those are spikes, especially growing this time of year, I wouldn't expect new growth starting.

What's the white fuzzy looking stuff on the media? Snail pellets?

white stuff is perlite/ part of the potting medium.
Now I am totally confused cos I thought photo 2 was a spike. Well we should all know for sure in about a month. I will post an update. I will feel good if the darn thing reblooms !
