Whatever tribe or family this is listed in, this particular plant is definitely NOT a cool growing Cymbidium companion plant. Perhaps this post should be moved to the Vanda Alliance where its warm growing cultural requirements would better suit it.

I found this quite surprising!!
I know this is an old post, but do you think the source could have had a typo? How does a Vanda alliance plant have pseudobulbs?

If you google Thecostele secunda, a synonym for this one, it's listed on wikipedia as being in tribe Cymbidiae and subtribe Eulophiinae, a classification that squares a lot better with the plant's vegetative morphology. I don't know a ton about the Aeridinae, but I can't think of a single one that is sympodial with pseudobulbs...

Culture-wise, Cymbidiae has everything from hot to cold growers, as does Vandeae, so it seems better to keep things oriented as to tribes than to classify by culture. Just my , though!

Nat,

I knew someone would come back with that reply as every orchid family/tribe/subspecies has its warmer and cooler growers, but then why have any Orchid Alliances on this OB?

And then there are the "lumpers and the splitters" as far as the technical names go. For me, I believe the most important question for any hobbyist is "Can I grow this plant under my conditions?"
