Default Ansellia africana 'Garden Party' HCC/AOS

I try to keep other orchids besides my cymbidiums to keep myself from getting bored....:-)

I won this one at the silent auction table of my Cymbidium club last night. It is more compact compared to the other Ansellias but has the same fragrance.

Although this genus might be successfully grown in Florida, it certainly is not one I would recommend as a "Cymbidium Companion" in most cool climates. I pulled the following culture hints from the AOS Forum:

"Ansellias need warm temps to bloom well. Keep them above 50 in the winter, preferably warmer. Also, they like high light and good watering during the growing season to bloom well. Some decrease in humidity and water in the winter is OK. Fertilize them heavily when growing, then back off in the fall. This is general, but they demand culture very much like Cymbidiums but much warmer."

That is like saying you can grow Cattleyas just like Cymbidiums but much warmer!

It is always interesting to see what other cool growing genera Forum members can successfully grow under the same conditions as they grow their Cymbidiums, but this genera is not one of them.

Very interesting, I will give it a couple of years and if I can't make it bloom again I may send it for adoption and concentrate on my cymbidiums.
