Setting up a record of your plants need not be difficult. I use a simple Excel file but I have also used a Word table format. If you are not on a computer, merely take lined paper and draw columns on it for the data you want to enter. I recommend Name (of plant), parents (if known), color, size (standard, novelty or miniature), where purchased, and when last potted. These are the basic columns.
It appears you helped your friend and perhaps you can help her more by helping her set up a list of the plants she has. It is fun to sit with someone and relive the source of their plants. If this is not an option with her plants, perhaps you can relive the source of your own plants before the memory dims.
I still have fun telling the story of how and where a friend and I bought our first Cymbidiums in bloom and how we brought them home in my friend's Corvette!
