Repot medium question
Hello I have a few cyms that I would like to repot. What would be the best medium to use for cyms? I don't really want to use the standard orchid mix from the store.
thanks

I have my Cyms in regular bark/perlite/charcoal mix and they have done great. I have 4 spikes and 2 new plant growths.

There are as many different orchid mix formulas on this forum as there are participants! Consider them all and then find one that best meets your requirements, with or without modifications:
1) ease of obtaining ingredients
2) climate conditions, ie hot, dry, wet, cold, humid, etc
3) location of plants - no, so, east or west.
4) Sun, air movement, drainage
5) latitude/longitude
To name only 5.

I buy all of mine from RePotme.com and I've really liked everything I've gotten from there thus far. They also have a feature where if you know the materials you want used you can specify how many cups of each you want in a custom made mix just for your specific desires. Just a thought if you don't have a store nearby that has all the mediums that you will need.

I was thinking about getting some from RePotMe.com. What mix did you get? I'm a newbie to all this orchid stuff. I appreciate all the input.

I used their Classic Cymbidium mix and was very pleased with it. I haven't used their Emperial line mainly because it is more expensive, but I do like the look of the classic mixes aesthetically speaking.

I use a mix of medium and fine fir bark with a fairly generous amount of pumice and/or perlite, a bit of charcoal, and some styro pnuts
I think many people use chc mix, combined with fir bark, or just the chc, perlite, charcoal, etc
Mix should retain moisture, but drain well.

Cym Layde listed some considerations, but it really does depend on where you live and your growing conditions. Have grown cymbidiums in three differant parts of the country - South West, North East and South West. I would use a differant mix in each area - so where do you live?

This is interesting orchids3. I would like to know what you would recommend for the midwest, specifically St. Louis, MO.

Paul,
Climate is the most important factor as Mother Nature will most assuredly dictate how and where you grow. Growing in a greenhouse is much different from growing outside or moving plants from house to outside, ie. "in and out growing" as I have come to call it. Wherever you live, you have to make a decision on how to protect your plants, whether from too much heat or too much cold.
