Spikes or new PB's?? Male
Default Spikes or new PB's??

Just curious as to if you think this is a spike or a new PB. I haven't had these bloom since I saved them from a hardware store. Thank you!

My guess would be new growth, but I've never grown cyms. If your plant still has remnants of the old spikes you could compare their locations with what you've got here. I'm pretty sure the fat growth in the background is the beginnings of a new growth but I don't know about the one in the foreground. It has a more pointed appearance in the photo but it might just be the angle. It's a good sign either way!

I think the one towards the center of the photo is a spike - the other might be. (I would think if one is a spike, it's probably likely the other is as well).

Either way I'll let you know who wins. I haven't seen these bloom at all yet. Curious as to what color they are.

I'm rooting for spikes! tho I wouldn't bet my life on it. I'm excited to see too!
The dark color makes me suspect red or purple blooms, if they are indeed spikes. The only cym I have that has dark spikes like that is the one with red blooms.

They both look like new growths to me.

When they get up another inch or so, a new growth will still be pointed and hard at the tip; a spike will be slightly rounded, soft and seem hollow at the extreme tip.

Although some growers claim that the red color of the growth or spike can mean a red flower, that is not always true. There are no "purple" Cymbidiums. It may rather indicate a chance of having a darker intensity of the red, rose or orange colors. It is all in the genetics so do not bet the house on it!

I have many saturated dark red standard Cyms but the growths and inflorescences are all medium green. On the other hand, I have an orange standard and a rose standard whose bulbs always have a very dark red overlay to them, even when mature.

That might be spikes - its the right time of year where we live. Am the guy that usually brings cymbidiums to the Jax Orchid Society. One comment -if those small round grey blue particles are time release fertilizer prills - you need to brush them away from the developing spike or backbulb. Sometimes you can get damage or burn damage to new growth or spikes.
Do you know the name of the plant?

I have three of those on my cymbidium as well. I saw them forming last year as well and had high hopes they would be flower spikes. I was semi-disappionted to find out they were just new growth. I say semi because at least I haven't killed it yet, lol... My vote is on new growth for the center one, but the one in the front does look a little different to me.

Best of luck!
