Hybrids have parents, genrally two different grexes bred together. Species are those plants found growing wild in nature and what might be referred to as "The Beginning" or "Source" of the genus, sort of as in "The buck stops here".
There are many different Cymbidium species. Kanran is but one of them.
Hybridizers often breed to perpetuate a species in cultivation, ie breeding one kanran to another kanran for instance to increase the population and/or improve the species. It would still be called kanran in this case.
