Default Cymbidium Kanran first flowers

I didn't think I would get to flower a Cym Kanran quite so quickly as this, as I had read it could be a difficult plant to get right with the buds blasting at the last moment and it being very susceptible to temp changes.
I have only had the plant for 18 months so as you can imagine I am rather pleased with the results with a first time spike.

Hi Kim,

This species was bought from a wholesale company called 'Water Orchids' in Taiwan.
They do a Green flowering Kanran and a Brown, although this is supposed to be a brown it seems to be a bit more reddish than the photo on their site.

Water Orchids come over to the UK for only a couple of the big shows a year. It is the only time you can get individual plants from them, otherwise you have to buy a minimum $2000 order!

Hybrids have parents, genrally two different grexes bred together. Species are those plants found growing wild in nature and what might be referred to as "The Beginning" or "Source" of the genus, sort of as in "The buck stops here". There are many different Cymbidium species. Kanran is but one of them.

Hybridizers often breed to perpetuate a species in cultivation, ie breeding one kanran to another kanran for instance to increase the population and/or improve the species. It would still be called kanran in this case.

Very nice Cymbidium kanran. I love all the Japanese Cym species. I remember smelling the Cym kanran that was in bloom at my local orchid nursery last year and it was lovely. I like the fragrance of kanran much more than Japanese goeringii.

Hi Tracy,

I am very much into all the Asian Cyms and don't mind if they are fragrant or not, it's just a bonus when they are
What makes this one special is that it was bought before it became FS so I had to do all the hard work.

Kim, Sorry I misunderstood your question and thank you CL for explaining

Thanks guys. I love these Asian Cymbs, but am not all that well acquainted with them. Since the name 'Kanran' was capitalized, I assumed it was a hybrid. Thanks for the clarification.
