You may have lost them. I heard there was a heat spell there and that can wreak havoc on new cym spikes

It has been very hot around here.
I bought a Cymbidium about 2 weeks ago and it had a very robust flower spike developing.
Now it has lost about half of the flowers to premature bud yellowing and falling off.

I still have the stronger buds on the spike, but they are oozing some transparent stuff at the base of the bud stem.

Does that mean, I will loose those too?

Can somebody explain what is going on here?

See photo:

Thanks,

Rodrigo

Rodrigo:
The droplet you see behind the bud is a sugar and very sweet. This is normal on cymbidiums. It does not mean that you will lose that bud (You may anyway but not because you see the drop of liquid)
What is the name of the Cymbidium that you bought for growing where you live? It is good to try different ones but for the most part at your elevation (the higher one anyway) you should be able to grow most cymbidiums. One thing I would be careful of is to not rotate the plants once you see a spike set. This may cause the buds to drop. Also be careful the plant doesn't dry out.

Hi Bob!
Thanks for your insight.
These flowers are slow to open up.
I'll wait and hope for the best.
Regards,

Rodrigo
