Dounoharm, I remember that Jones and Scully - fabulous Cattleya breeders - had some difficult years before they finally closed their doors. I believe they were hit by a problem with one of the chemicals regularly used on the orchids which did considerable damage and then a hurricane seemed to finish things.
Economy no doubt had a hand in some. But I think also, many were dedicated orchid growers who grew old and no one comming up the ranks to replace them as quickly as they were lost. These companies were not big conglomerates but businesses held by families or dedicated men.
Oh! Ilgenfritz! Species orchids. They were abouts Minnesota way I believe.
