Picked this up yesterday at a garden center with no id.
Is this C. Miss Taipei Unveiled? The roots is very thick , similar to phalaenopsis.

Some more newbie questions, how long does the flower usually last? will it grow well and bloom at a south facing windowsill? Finally, does it need cold nights to induce bloom?

Can't help with the ID, but it's really pretty.

I'm also new to growing these so can't give much advice on that either.

M1dr,

It has similar flower characteristics but the racemes are noticeably shorter than the ones usually seen on the clone. But then, garden centers are notoriously bad for their general care of orchids. Until you can actually compare your photo to that of a known clone, hold off on the name.

It's lovely
yes, cyms have very fat roots, and they grow and grow - so much fun when repotting

My hybrid cyms usually hold blooms 2-3 months, but I am sure there are factors that can shorten that.

I don't know if your particular plant needs cool nights to induce blooming - for myself, if I don't know I presume it does. I haven't grown any cyms indoors so can't comment on the light question other than give it as much light as you can. They need a good deal.

It does look very similar but as stated before it can be hard to be certain. The lip on one I was just looking at had deeper spotting but the petals looked very similar.

Bolero,

The Cym. species sinense is extremely dominant in its characteristics and hence many of its progeny are quite similar. Unless the other parent is known you are correct in that it is best not to guess.

Thank you for confirming that for me.

Parentage is Cymbidium Miss Taipei Unveiled (Cymbidium Super Baby x Cymbidium sinense) and I have to say that Super Baby isn't familiar to me really.

Bolero,

Cym. Super Baby (ensifolium x Babylon) registered by Takagi is a rather nondescript novelty sized flower with a muddy, pinkish color on a fairly small sized plant. The sleuthing out of the parents of Miss Taipai Unveiled was done by a hobbyist in Oakland, CA. because she so liked the mericlone that showed up on the market. Whether or not that is the real parentage, I do not know. Just my opinion, but it has been a popular pot plant because of its rather compact size.
