Why does my green cym turn white?? Female
Default Why does my green cym turn white??

I have two green cyms, one that I bought from a garden centre, and the other from a reputable orchid provider, and after one year of being green they have reflowered, but they have changed colour! They are now both white. Is there anything I should put in the water to help them retain their green colour?

By the way, Happy New Year

I think its possible the plants were flowered in heavy shade. You may have them in a lot of light. Nothing can be added to the water to change them.

Thanks for your reply. Does this happens to orchids - they change colour in the shade? Are green orchids grown in dark greenhouses before being brought to garden centres?

Both temperature and light level can have big influences on flower color, and not just in orchids. Growers try to provide conditions for optimal flower color while bringing the plants into bloom before distribution, but these may not be the same conditions that are best for long term growth and health of the plant.

I think it is more likely that the green color is more prominent when the plant is grown very bright, yet quite cool - a combination that is hard to duplicate in the home.

In my experience growing outdoors all year, the best and cleanest green flowers are obtained from heavy shading of the inflorescence starting when the buds first emerge from the sheath. Bright sunlight will fade and or yellow the green.

This is very true, some colors require lots of light to build the color, GREEN is NOT one of them.

This has been all most instructive, and thank you all for your help! I'll see what happens next year. The flowers I hope will come will lots of fertiliser, and I'll try your suggestions.

He is trying to sell World of Warcraft Gold in an orchid forum. I doubt he would find much of a market for it in these forums......lol.
