i am intereste but on a tight budget. maybe i can look into some exchange one or 2 growths.

the issue for me is that in my bedroom where i keep the plants since there are 2 southern windows now the temperature near the radiator is close to 90 F sometimes. on the other side it is about 7- so probably winter blooms would not last long.

I have both minis (mini refers to smaller flowers on a typical big plant) and ensifoliums. I have trouble blooming ensifolium but their foliage is gorgeous especially if you put them in Chinese purple clay pots which you can get in the US. My Golden Elf 'Sundust' is much bigger than my ensifoliums but smaller than a standard cym. I often have 5-7 spikes and the scent is heavenly. The spikes come up in sequence so it blooms for a few months. I also have Bulbo. lobbii (new for me) but I think everyone should have a Golden Elf. It doesn't have great markings (no stripes or spots, just solid pastel yellow) but it's consistency and fragrance more than make up for that, IMHO.

Oh and I have not been able to get Grcym. Lovely Melody to rebloom since I got it a few years ago. Golden Elf always blooms in late summer or late fall for me.

Well, at least you've gotten your Lovely Melody to bloom. Mine consistently makes nice new growths, but so far it has not flowered for me. I've had it for two years and it's already broken out of a one-gallon plastic cymbidium pot (its roots expanded to a point that the side of the pot ruptured). Since the grammatophyllum parent is a giant, perhaps mine just needs to get a little bigger. But I agree with you on the Golden Elf; it's a great hybrid (and yes, Stefano, both Cymbidium ensifolium and its hybrids can bloom more than once per year).

Smweaver, I haven't had any bloom from LM. Musta been all that eggnog you drank!
Hmmmm, didn't know the ensifoliums can bloom more than once. That means I'm missing even more blooms!

today at this store in chinatown i actually saw a grcym. with yellow flowers with lemon-y scent.

it was 50 bucks and had growth growing outside the pot. nice plump pseudobulbs.

a bit large and pricey for me.

anyway i am a bit confused between the ensifolium and the Golden Elf.

which is easier to grow/ bloom?
and is it Phal light or Catt light?
I live in an apt in brooklyn and I already have a Coelogyne asperata, Spathoglottis plicata and Phaius tankervilliae that have long roots.

terrestrial orchids seem the fastest growing [got some reed stem epidendrum and reed stem epicattleya Nebo].

since I am new I dont want to get what I cant bloom.
Phals, Spathoglottis, Pinguiculas [mexican carnivorous plants], Dendrobium Hamana Smile are blooming in my conditions.

More into species than hybrids. but i am okl with primary hybrids as well or if the hybrid would bloom a lot more than the species it originates.
Regarding the ensifolium i think i prefer one that has some color not so much a white or plain yellow flower. would like a green one actually

Golden Elf is much easier to bloom for me. I have it outside in full sun in summer and I leave it out till frost but it can grow in warm temps cause it's temperature tolerant. It is a cross between ensifolium (50%) and Cym. Enid Haupt (a combo of insigne, lowianum, eburneum, hookerianum, mastersii, parishii). I bet you won't get this one (cause it's not a wowser) but if you did, you would know why I think you should. It's the only cym that bloomed for me for the last 5 years every year, it always puts out a ton of spikes, and I crave the scent all year while I'm waiting for it to bloom and wish there was a soap with it!!! It is a lot less frustrating than all the other cyms combined. But I have some green ones with less than perfect performance, too. I love greens. If I had to chose one cym to take to a tropical island it would be golden elf.

Blooming the Cym. ensifolium derived hybrids takes extended warmth, high light and humidity. You are doing well to get the bloom from your Golden Elf that you state. Intergenerics are even more touchy and getting the one you mentioned to bloom is difficult, if not impossible from what I have learned from my friends who purchased them!

In regard to your definition of "miniature": A true Miniature Cymbidium is miniature in flower size AND in plant size. The term "Novelty" is currently the proper term for the small sized flowers on the larger leaved/bulbed plant. Both must have miniature parents, either directly in the first generation for the Miniature Cymbidium or further back in the background of the Novelty.
