I just love Cymbidiums, it's actually one of my favorite orchid. You should note that some are warm loving like the one posted and some cold loving. Most tend to bloom in the winter time, however some blooms from April onward. My experience is that it's a very easy to grow orchid.
It's very hard to source where I'm from, as not many persons grow it.

Hi,

This hybrid was made by Bartly Swartz at Highland Tropicals. It is a Hybrid of Golden Elf and Via Amborino. Bartly got the FCC/AOS on the Via Amborino and made the cross. This was the best or if not the only good one out of the cross. Bartly made allot of very unique and wonderful hybrids.
The only problem when you cross anything with Golden Elf it looks like Golden Elf. This is an exception to that rule!!

Does anybody have the precise parentage for the "Everglades Gold" hybrid?

I have a couple of these plants but they haven't bloom yet.

Hi Rodrigo,

I checked on Orchid wiz and I couldn't find Everglades Gold, but did find Everglades. Parents of Cym. Everglades are Cym. parishii x Cym Peter Pan (Cym. ensifolium x cym. Miretta). Hope this helps till an expert can chime in.

'Everglades' is not the cross name, but part of the varietal name 'Everglade's Gold', given to this particular plant in the cross and then mericloned. The cross was registered, as Jeff said, as Cym. Milton Carpenter (Golden Elf x Via Ambarino) by Bartley Swartz of Highland Tropicals.

Golden Elf is a 3", yellow Novelty (ensifolium x Enid Haupt) and Via Ambarino is a large, 7", yellow, Standard (Via Cox x Thanksgiving).

Although this plant was bred for warm climate growing, more of the seedlings tended to be short on flower count and stem length. Fortunately, this clone was better in both areas, fragrant, brightly colored, warmth tolerant, deemed to have a retail value and was mericloned for the Florida and warm state markets.

All true - very interesting plant - only patented orchid a few years ago - Lots of clones around some with a little mutation. I know Milton Carpenter held the patent on it.
Was it a product of Highland Orchids or Everglades Orchids in Belle Glade Fla.? Really dont know. Sometimes two hybridizers have the same idea so it would be interesting to know. I did see othere clones that were not very good and Milton indicated that it was really the only good one. Had a plant crossed with Milton Carpenter but it did not grow well and I eventually trashed it. Milton Carpenter itself seemed to be prone to rot. May have one out in the shadehouse somewhere.

A few more thoughts on this. Yes 'Everglades Gold' is in fact the meristem that is patented and in commercial production. It is however the 3n form and thus doesn't breed well. I did flower a whole flask load of the 4N remake that Loren Batchman made LB 1566 with the 4n of Golden Elf. While some of the seedlings did not have as full a petal or sepal as the meristem, I was pleasantly surprised to have many of them bloom with flower counts between 16-18, a good stature on the spike and a bit longer flower life. Flower size was the same exact OW as the patented meristem. All were very warm tolerant blooming at near sea level in Hawaii. Color was as deep yellow in almost all the seedlings. Spots varied a bit on the lip.

I response to Jeff's comment about the offspring of GE all looking like GE, I think I'll reserve some thoughts here as I have a cross that seems to defy this a bit and I think that will be true more and more as people use the 4N of GE to breed warm tolerants, IMHO

RE Culture. I can't say I treat it different than any other standard cymbidium except to say it does like to flower where it is warm. The season here for this cross is well over 6 months.
If you look at the current CSA Journal (Nov-Dec 2010) I have an article there about some notes and thoughts I had on growing and flowering this meristem in 2 years from flask.

The cross was made and registered by Bartley Swartz of Highland Tropicals and flasks were obtained by Milton. I know that Bartley gave Milton a division of the FCC awarded Via Ambarino 'Highland' but whether or not they made the cross concurrently and Bartley was first to bloom his and hence register it, I do not know.

As Bob said, it has been remade as a 4n with hopefully good results.
