These really put on a show when they bloom. How long is the spike?

How big is your plant to bloom
Hi I just bought one of these from hawaii. Its a big plant, but I was wondering if they must reach a certain size or # of bulbs before they bloom. What kind of potting mix do you use. Mine came in a almost 100 % potting soil mix. Do you grow yours in a greenhouse?.
How do you water in the winter ?

Hi Mike - I did a lot of research when I first got this plant. Consensus from successful growers: grow in full sun, water every day, feed every week.
That's what I do, it blooms every June without fail, and is a giant, honking monster that I kind of regret ever bringing home. Aspirations of world domination!
I grow it in a large cedar basket, with standard bark/charcoal mix.
Somebody had a behemoth at our show last June - I don't know how they got it here from Baton Rouge, it was well over 8' tall with the inflorescences. Impressive, yet frightening.
Cheers - Nancy

Water Every day
So you water every day even in the winter.
I have a fogger and have let it get a good blast on sunny days as well as a watering every 3 days lightly.
Should I water and fertilize heavy every day.

Hi again - Yes, I do continue to water and fertilize in winter - with the caveat that I am in the deep south, and grow it in full sun, warm, year 'round. I suspect you would want to adjust your schedule if you are in a chillier area.
Just remember, it will try to take over!
Cheers - Nancy
