Cymbidium flower buds blasting ... why? Male
Default Cymbidium flower buds blasting ... why?

My Cymbidium plants are growing strong and healthy and all were producing flower spikes. As soon as the spikes were about five inches long, with some flower buds developing, the buds changed to a yellow color and blasted. Eventually the flower spikes all went yellow and ceased to grow. They all became black and I therefore removed the now dead material. I am wondering why this should happen and what can be done to have some flowering success.

A. Which cymbidiums are you growing?
B. What is your average night time temperature?
C. What is your average day time temperature?

Around here, this sort of thing happens if spikes are initiated and then left to grow on where night time temps are too warm; you will see the spike rapidly elongate, but when the buds clear the sheath they will rapidly begin to yellow and fall off. The few "warmth tolerant" cymbidiums in my collection are less prone to doing this, though they still show better colors when grown under cooler conditions (in my experience). Hope this helps a bit,
Adam

I agree with what stone dragon says. Have caused my own buds to blast by transporting the plants into a warm building. I find that they are best kept outside with good air circulation even if it does get quite cool. If you must protect them from freezing at least put them in a cool building with lots of air circulation. This comment if from Florida so my consideration for cold weather is a lot differant than our northern states.
