my backbulb has sprouted, now what? - Orchid Board

Hi,

I stuck this back bulb in LECA and now I have a sprout.

This is my first attempt at this. Should I give it bright light or keep it somewhat shaded? I keep it damp but not wet. It's in a greenhouse so it has decent humidity and air circulation. I don't want it to rot after all this.

Any hints?

Do you know what kind of orchid it is, species, genus, or hybrid? That will help in figuring out the light needs.

Sorry about the photos, let's see if this works.

The bulb is from a grocery store noid labeled "miniature cymbidium".
I want to see if I can get this sprout to grow and form roots. Is there anything I should know about doing that? I've read other posts on OB about getting other species to root (high humidity, lower light etc) and wondered if it was the same for cyms.

I know I'll have to play around with the growing requirements if I'm fortunate enough to get a viable plant since my conditions here are not very cymbidium friendly. (a subject for another post, I'm sure!)

I give up, trust me, there is a sprout at the base of the bulb.

There are multiple posts on this subject. I just cannot give you the name of the last actual thread.

There are as many ways to ensure the development of a growth on a Cym. back bulb as there are contributors to this forum. I successfully use the bark in Ziplok bag method or "spag in bag" as it was recently referred to. However, that said, I would suggest you put your BB upright in a 3" pot and cover it about 1/3 to 1/2 with a fine bark/perlite mix. Place in a shaded spot, water regularily (about once a week) and hope for the best.

If I can find the recent post on BBs I will put it on this thread, if someone doesn't beat me to it
