I never know quite when to stake cym spikes! I have been known to snap one or two by mistake, which of course leads to tears of frustration.

This year I'm just letting them do their thing naturally.

I was taught to put a plant Label slightly in front of the new spike and let it turn up as it grows against the labels. This helps get them growing in the right direction. Have snapped a few spikes myself but find the spikes crisp and brittle during the morning hours and a little more limber late in the day. Experience is the best teacher - later you will know when it is mature and limber enough to bend without breaking - just by touching it .

Toshie,

When I see the spikes in the pots up a couple of inches, I place a stake near the spike, or in the case of multiple spikes, I arrange the stakes around the pot for better presentation. I place a loose, figure-eight loop around the spike and the stake. Gently raise the loop on both as the spikes elongate so that you are gradually bringing the spike closer to the stake and nearer the final position you want it to be in for the best display.

And yes, the warmer the day the better for "fiddling", with less chance of breakage.

Patience is the word!
