CYMBIDIUM CARE Male
Default CYMBIDIUM CARE

I have about 35 big pots of cymbidiums and I'm just wondering how to take care of them during the summer? They are all outside in the patio. Summer temp here in my town is betwwen 95-108 degrees so I was wondering if being in the patio is okay during the summer? If so, how often do I have to water them? Is it safer to bring them ALL inside? Please help as summer quikly approaches my town. Thanks in advance. You can email me at mlvnapplehead1@yahoo.com

Cymbidiums are pretty hardy orchids but will need some help to survive your summer temperatures. Place them where they will be under 50-70% shade from about 10 AM to about 4 PM. Once temperatures regularly go over 75F, water more frequently such as every 3 to 4 days in the morning and when it goes over 90F water every other day. There should be good air circulation around them (important at all times but especially during hot weather) and try to not crowd them too closely, leaving at least one foot (two feet is better if you have the space) between pots. Feed them a dilute mix of a good balance type orchid fertilizer once or twice a week. To prevent possible heat damage to leaves (if leaves feel very warm they are on the verge of being damaged), it helps if you can mist the leaves once or twice a day when it is over 90F.

Not sure what you have them potted in or when they were last repotted, but it would be a good idea to check them to see if the potting medium is still okay or needs replacement. With more frequent waterings, it should be in very good condition to allow air to circulate through the mix to help it dry out between waterings and prevent root rot because it doesn't.

Hope this has helped.
Jim

Default THANKS

THANK YOU for the very good advice. I will follow what you said. I have all my cymbidiums in the patio and all has just been re-potted in a black 4 gallon pot with orchid midium bark. This summer I'm planning to have a fan in the patio for air circulation. Right now I'm watering them once a week but I will water them often when the heat wave comes. Thanks for all the help.

HI!

I have several cymbidiums. I keep all of mine indoors, though my temps are fairly high. My cymbidiums need constant access to water. I water mine every other day, and will increase it to every day in summer. I've had great success with this regimen.

I hope this helps.

If you keep your cym. inside, what window do you place them in? West, East?

I place mine where they get the most light possible. (My window is a south facing window.)
