Where is yours kept in winter because I am sure it is absolutely freezing where you come from? Anyone who grow orchids in those cold places is very dedicated and deserves a medal.

Thanks SueK,
I also keep mine out in my garden from May to October, allmost in full sun. All my Cymbidiums are still out, but soon i have to carry them to my garrage, the temperature there is +8-14 C
In summer we have a lot of light here in Finland, but summer is short. My greenhouse elongates the growing period significantly, so i am able to cultivate all kinds of orchids here up north.

Lowianum, my favorite species, I lost all of mine in a bush fire some years ago and have never been able to replace them, so I will enjoy yours . Well done !

Hi!
I just got a Cymbidium lowianum and I'm excited reading all about it and watching the photos!
Can anybody help me with:
1- What is the best substrate for this type Cymbidium ?
2- How cold does it have to get for it to bloom?
Thanks,
Rodrigo

Rodrigo,
Cym. lowianum is definitely a cool growing species, originally coming from the higher elevations of India. It will tolerate, if necessary, temperatures down to 28 F for short periods of time, but should have temps in the fall as the days grow shorter, under 55 F to set blooms.
Cym. lowianum is very hardy and will tolerate different potting media, as long as there is good drainage. Good drainage is an absolute must for all Cymbidiums, species or hybrids.
Good Luck,
CL

I'm looking for a division of lowianum 'Comte d'Hemptienne' 4N. Does anyone have one?
Also I am wondering if the 'Concolor' has more heat tolerance. I understand that to be the case for many alba and or pure color forms.
Thanks

Bob,
I may have a division or BB of Cym lowianum 'Compte d'Hemptienne' later this summer after dividing mine but I suspect that SBOE has plants now and can ship. Email me privately if you need more information.
I have not found the 'concolor' variety to be more heat tolerant. All the varieties I have seem equally cold tolerant, however, and I really have no way of testing for heat tolerance. Perhaps some of the Forum members in the Southeast can give you more practical information.

Cym Ladye:
Thanks for your response.
I'm confused as to the temperatures. Are you talking in Centigrade or Fahrenheit?

Rodrigo,
I must have been only half conscious when I answered your mail. Obviously, it should have been Fahrenheit and not Centigrade, as I am in California. I apologize and I have corrected it in my post. I am glad you caught it.
