Unless I'm reading the posts wrong, everyone seems to emphasize the mini cym as a small flower as opposed to the plant. I believe when they started to appear - as mentioned earlier - in the 60's and 70's that it was the plant itself that merited the 'mini' title. (the flowers just seem to match the plant)
The love of Cymbidiums, but the ease of growing were two different matters. And the hobby industry was really taking off. To grow a Cymbidium on a windowsill before then was unheard of. I mean, how do you get a tall plant in a two or three gallon tub on the windowsill - and then try to give it the cooling period needed to flower from that windowsill perch? But if you could tailor down a plant with those famous blooms to a windowsill and then breed into it something that would bloom under most home conditions - now your looking at a great commercial plant for any orchid hobbyist!
BobfHarris, you mentioned Rod McLellan Co. Do you remember a company called Jung Orchids? They specialized in Phals and Cyms (not 'minis'). I think they came on the scene end of 70's possibly early 80's. If so, were they the group that came out with the 'Dos Pueblos' moniker?
