Default Cyrt. puctatum Potting

Ok, I have to admit that I have a few terrestrial orchids but I have not had to repot enough to pay close attention to what the soil mix should be, so here goes.

I have a small Cyrt. puctatum that need to be repotted. What soil mix should I use with this? Are these plants particular about what size pot they are in?

Any guidance is appreciated!

Hello,

I grow a few Cyrtopodium species, and all are definitely terrestrial-loving. I would highly suggest a 'Cactus Mix' for this genus, as it is a fast draining medium. Also, this will give the semi-tuberous roots something it won't completely dry out in. Keeping Cyrtopodium with 'wet feet' will quickly rot not only the roots, but the entire pseudobulb.

Also, as for pot size, I would suggest clay pots from 6" to 8" in diameter. Also, try for a deeper pot than normal. This gives way for the roots to travel down more, and in turn, let the plant grow taller. A shallow pot will stunt the bulbs, unless they start to grow more pendant.
