Question Peristeria Elata care questions (yellowing leaf)

Hello!

I recently (about three weeks ago) acquired one of my dream orchids, a (very huge) peristeria elata!

I noticed recently that the side of one of the leaves on its newest bulb is starting to yellow. I am aware that this plant tends to lose its leaves as it enters the winter, but, as non of the older growths are yellowing, I began to worry that something is up with the plant. Am I not giving it enough humidity? is it just stressed from shipping? Is it just adjusting to a new environment?

I currently having it growing indoors in sphagnum moss, receiving water when ever the plant approaches dryness. It receives light from a south facing window (that is partially shaded by an oak tree). The humidity of the room is around 50%. Its has been on the rainy and colder side where I live (days have been from 50F-70).

If anyone has any idea of what I could be doing wrong, please let me know!

Thanks!

Welcome to the Orchid Board.

If you use the Advanced Search from the top maroon menu you can find detailed information on growing this plant.

What are the temperatures in the growing area? How large is the plant? The pot? Does it still have any developing growths, or have all growths reached final size?

I don't think it's a humidity issue.

Hello! Thanks for responding!

The plant is large, with 4 pseudo bulbs, and 3 foot leaves on the newest growth. The newest growth seems to have reached its final size! It’s been 70F in the day and 60F at night in the growing area. The plant is in a five inch pot.

That's flowering size. Those temperatures are somewhat low for this plant. They need a completely dry winter to flower. They usually drop all leaves. Put it somewhere as warm as you can keep it, with as much sun as possible. Let the pot go completely dry. Don't begin watering until new growth is well along, or an inflorescence is well on the way. During the growing season it should not get dry, and it would probably prefer being outside in Sacramento, in dappled shade but on the brighter side.
