help! w/ saving Grammatophylum scriptum 'Leopard'
Default help! w/ saving Grammatophylum scriptum 'Leopard'

The last maybe 2 months the grammatophylum has been declining and I don't know why or what to do.

history:
I purchased a gorgeous grammatophylum from a botanical garden and it was doing famously for maybe 6 month at home. After flowering, I took it out of the pot (it is a mass of roots) and left it open (no pot/media) to the air and it grew 3 more sets of leaves

I water deeply 1x per week and mist maybe every few days. I live in New England and the plant sits near a south-eastern facing window.

There's a sap-like crystal formation that is under some of the leaves since I got the plant. I rinsed the sugar-like substance off a couple times.

The last 2 months the psuedobulbs shriveled and haven't plumped back up. The leaves have been dying one by one - turning yellow with brown spots and then dropping off.

Could I be over watering? Does it have a disease? Any suggestions on how to figure this out and improve it's life quality would be so great!

Thank you

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

What are your ambient temperatures and humidity?

Does it get only natural light?

These are very high water use orchids. I don't think it would do well out of a pot except in a very humid greenhouse with daily watering.

They also prefer warm to hot temperatures. Natural New England light is probably not enough.

They normally produce a basket of upright roots.

I suggest repotting it to a pot somewhat larger than previous. Keep it always moist. Keep it as warm and humid as you can.
