Confused about Cymbidium winter rest Female
Question Confused about Cymbidium winter rest

I have a mini Cymbidium (sold as Sleeping Angel but I suspect mislabeled) which is blooming right now. It also has two new growths with leaves almost full length but pseudobulbs still quite immature. This is the first year I've had the plant so I'm confused as to when it has to rest for the winter.

Does it have to rest after flowering finishes considering the time of year or do I continue watering and fertilizing as usual until the new pseudobulbs mature?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Cyms need to stay moist through the year. Fertilizer is greatly reduced in winter. As much light as possible is best in winter. Most hybrids want very cool winter nights, but hybrids including warm-growing species prefer warmer nights.

Why do you think the tag is wrong? Do you have flower photos? We might be able to guess at ancestry.

Thanks for responding but my question has more to do with when the rest period should start - right after flowering or after all new growths have matured. I know about the watering and fertilizing.

What do you mean by rest period?

Let me rephrase: when should I reduce fertilizer? Now that it's blooming or keep fertilizing in case the new growths will continue growing?

I would reduce fertilizer now. The new growths have completed most of their cell division. The rest of the enlargement in size will mostly be due to taking up water.

Growth is the addition of new cells, isn’t it, and not just the swelling of existing ones? If it’s all water uptake, I’d think there’d be a lot of cellular explosions.

I have a different experience...I always fertilize with max concentration (i.e. the recommended concentration mentioned in the label).
When they are not growing, in autumun and winter, they are spiking. The only period when they don't seem to be doing nothing (considering only what's visible) is when blooms open. After that, there is a period of a few months until spring when apparently there's no activity (altough under the medium new growths are developing).

The growths she described probably finished the great majority of cell division.

I fertilize Cymbs with a slow release fertilizer in the pot twice a year, plus they get whatever fertilizer dose I'm using in the water for the rest of the plants, which is less often from November through February. I don't do a winter rest of any type for the Cymbidiums.
