I believe it's a type of brown rot; in cymbidiums it usually occurs when water stagnates in new growths--established growths are typically not affected. You will usually see the central leaf of the growth begin to brown from the tip and proceed down to the bulb, about 50% of the time subsequent leaves will begin to do the same thing. If you gently grab the affected leaf and give it a tug, it should completely come free from the developing pseudobulb. The upside to this is I've never known it to be fatal (at least on any plant in my collection) as it's easily cured by cultural means--ie when watering: a. Don't water overhead unless you do so early in the day [ie before 8am]; rather flood the pots with water by watering directly at media level & b. Some species and hybrids are more prone to this condition than others--in my collection, anything with a large percentage of pumilum in it is suspect--so be proactive and flag those pots so you pay extra attention to them [side note, I've found hanging them helps, as there's typically higher airflow [ie things dry faster] 5+ feet off the ground]
Hope this helps,
AP
