You're exactly right, Roberta. I'm already wondering if I should have just asked Cal-Orchid if they had any ensifoliums instead.

In St Louis I knew several people in the banana cult who grew a clump of bananas in ther front lawn. In fall they threw an outdoor party. Everybody helped undermine the clump, slide a large tarp under it, and drag it into the basement, where it spent the winter dry near a window. In spring there was another party to reverse the process. Guests were given a banana sprout from the edge of the clump if they wished, and they joined the cult.

If this ever gets anywhere near to be that much trouble, it will be hauled out to the end of my driveway with a "free to good home" note attached to it.

When I repotted it in the spring, the inside of the pot was probably something like 80 to 90% roots, with very little observable potting material. I don't know what the plant did with the bark, but I wouldn't be surprised if it somehow figured out a way to devour it.

Excellent suggestion. But it will probably be a combination of beer and friends and a machete. I would actually like to keep it together as one big specimen. I will just need to determine which piece of furniture I'll have to part with first.
