Grammatocymbidium sources anyone? - Orchid Board

I have a Memoria Nathan Newman NN that has 2 huge spikes coming along and meanwhile I continue to sit here waiting for my alleged "warmth tolerant" Cyms to do anything.

I know there have not been many crosses made but does anyone know of a source for these crosses? I'd like to see what other colors might be on the market and I really don't see anything out there.

I have seen a few tiny mericlones offered by Olympic Orchids over the years. They never have a lot of any one thing, so you need to check back frequently to see what is in stock.

I would also contact a lot of the Hawaii nurseries and see whether they have any not listed on their Web pages.

I think orchids growing into fairly large plants are harder to find, especially if they are warm growing. Most people in the US need to grow orchids indoors or in a greenhouse for at least part of the year. Greenhouse and windowsill growers tend to want as many plants as possible in their growing spaces, so they often avoid large plants. Cymbidiums, though large plants, are readily available because so many people in California can grow them outdoors all year. Grammatophyllums would probably only do well outdoors all year in southern Florida and in Hawaii.

But seriously. I want one

KG, do you have the Everglades gold cym? I get a spike from it until it is eaten by something.

There are 36 registered grammatocymbidium hybrids, most done by Pakkret Floriculture in Thailand.

Of the photos I have seen, green and yellow are the predominate colors, although I remember one hybrid that had some red in the lip and extending slightly into the other flower segments.

The one I have is Suu Basan which I got 4 years ago from Santa Barbara OS. Can't even tell you what color it is because I've never seen it and they no longer have a picture up, at least that I was able to find. I think I recall there was at least one "Everglades" named parent which is what you would expect given their work on the topic.

Correct Ray. Pakkret seems to be leading the development of these hybrids. I suppose I could always contact them and see if they'd tell me who they have wholesaled to over here. I don't want one bad enough to have to buy flasks and deal with importing stuff.

Carter & Holmes offered large Grammatophyllum speciosoum seedlings once, years ago, through their special E-mail list offerings. I got one. It was about 3 feet tall on arrival and had about 5 canes. It grew really well for me. Then, at the very start of my rat problem, a rat ate off a new growth. Rot spread from there through the plant despite everything I tried and it died. Pack rat chewing is known to orchid growers here frequently to cause rots that can't be controlled.

I would encourage you to keep trying. It should grow well in your climate. I would love to try it again.

Maybe we can make this plant the official OB project of spring 2021!

I actually have a Grammatophylum scriptum seca but I'm looking for Grammato/Cym crosses.

If you hand pollinate your plant and get pods, I suspect you would find takers among US growers and flasking businesses.
