Cymbidium ensifolium var. album '日月宝(Riyuebao)'

This is a dwarf variety of ensifolium--it is only half as tall as standard ensifolium, making it even smaller than most goeringii. As an added bonus, it has slight variegation on the leaves. While it is tiny, the fragrance is just as great as standard ensifolium.

I'm a big fan of the chinese cyms...never had one myself and seen very few in person...but they look divine, and to be fragrant too...!!

Obviously I cannot speak universally, but when I was in PA and importing about 500 Chinese cymbidiums a month, I learned of a pricing situation I was unaware of.

My cost for a bare root plant - two recent, mature growths and a new one on the way, in-spike - was about $5 delivered from Taiwan. I sold a fair number online, but the majority went to a guy who potted them up in decorative cymbidium pots and sold them to the Asian population of NYC (to whom there is apparently some superstitious value), for anywhere from $75-$125 each.

I imagine that might be true wherever else there's a big Asian population.

They're in China. Because these are species, not hybrids, to import them legally requires a normal import permit, a phytosanitary certificate and a CITES permit. The last is very difficult to manage for individuals.

Looks good. I picked up one of these from Rare Earth Orchids recently for 30. I hope they smell nice.
