Default 2009 OrchidBoard Calendar

Time for another contest! The 2008 calendars turned out great. Many of you liked them and I still have and use them at home and at work, plus all my family members have them too

As far as profitability of the 2008 calendars goes, we didn't manage to raise any funds for OrchidBoard, but hopefully this time around it will be better. Doesn't seem like we lost any money either, so it's not too bad.

Future proceeds (if any) from the sale of the calendars will directly support the growth of the orchid board community and will contribute to the software upgrades and costs of hosting and any future server upgrades.

I've seen throughout the years tons of amazing photos and it only makes sense that we showcase the cream of the crop in a calendar. We will crack the theme for this calendar wide open - "ANY ORCHID PHOTO". If it's an orchid, it will work.

2009 Calendar will consist of 13 images (1 cover and 12 for individual months)

This was the cover of our 2008 Calendar:

Each photo will be captioned with the scientific name of the orchid and the name/username of the person who took the photo.

Deadline: Sun August 24th, 2008 at midnight

Prizes:
In an effort to actually raise some funds for OB, this time the top 3 voted images will receive copies of the calendar.

Lets make this one count! Lets turn out an amazing calendar.

Please email any calendar entries to
2009calendar@orchidboard.com

You may post a sized version (not larger then 640px in width) of your image in this thread for all to see. I will select the final choices and we will vote for the cover and the 12 images together. This is always very hard.

Contest rules.

1. Images must be submitted unsized and at maximum available resolution. The requirements are
11.5 x 9 in. (trimmed on calendar to 11 x 8.5 in.) at 200dpi. This translates to an image 2300x1800 at 200dpi
In other words the bigger the better. (template here) If needed I will size the images, please don't do it yourself. Send the original files.

2. Orientation of the Image must be 'landscape'. Portrait entries will not be considered. (See example here)

3. Once you submit an image you give orchid board the right to manipulate it/size it/crop it and alter it in any way we want in order to use it, and also re-use the image at a later time in conjunction with other Orchid Board activities.

4. Submitted image must be your own work. Plant has to be from your own collection (at least at the time the photo was taken) Use of other or copyright material will result in immediate disqualification

5. When you submit the photos please be sure to include the following information.
Scientific Name:
Your Real Name:
Your OrchidBoard username:

6. 1 photo per member. Select your best entry and do not send more then 1 image. Previously we allowed more photos, but lets give equal chances to everyone this time ... Ross

7. Please make sure the photos are free of any watermarks or text.

Have FUN & GOOD LUCK!

Awesome!! I was wondering if you were going to do another Calander. You said that it must be from our collection, so does that mean that wild orchids are out?

I guess wild ones are OK, since you could add it to your collection

Cool! That's a great idea...

Is there any requirements for the format of the picture: Portrait or Landscape?

Can you submit a picture of a flower that has already been used in a previous calendar? I don't mean the same shot, just the same type of flower.

Now wait just a minute! It was a different time back then... Actually, I hadn't really considered entering this year due to pressures from my photo business. It's hard to sort through thousands of images I've made this year alone and still keep up with submissions to photo buyers. I think the rules are fare, but I would like to ask that photos of wild orchids protected by CITES not be included. Based on your comment: "I guess wild ones are OK, since you could add it to your collection", I assume we are highlighting species that are legal to have in a collection. I would also assume a wild plant protected by CITES would not find its way into any of our collections? Now, I could be wrong on this, since some protected species are available through seed collection, etc. Sorry this is so long, but I only wanted the best for this project and hope we don't send a wrong message to callendar buyers.

This sounds pretty cool. Your rules state that the pics can not be "sized," however, using the program that is provided by the OB, Ive "sized" all my pics to be medium. Am I correct in assuming that I can not submit pics because of this? Also, I went back and re-read the rules and right above the line that says "Images must be submitted unsized" there is a line that says "You may post a sized version." Which one is correct? Im also not sure how to find out the "dpi" stuff. Marty, can I just send you my 2 pics and you accept/reject them?

Sounds sensible to me too. Just so it's clear, Dave (Flhiker) is a conservation minded and responsible, at least judging from my chats with him (and c'mon, we know which orchid he was talking about).
